If you've lived in Newport, Williamstown, Yarraville or Footscray for any length of time, there's a good chance you've walked past a PJR garden without knowing it. We've been building outdoor spaces across Melbourne's inner west for more than two decades, and the work tends to speak for itself.
PJR Landscaping and Design is a Newport-based landscaping company with a team of 13 qualified tradesmen and a track record that stretches from the bay suburbs through to Brighton, Toorak, Fitzroy and everywhere in between. We're not a one-man operation quoting jobs on weekends and subcontracting everything out. We're a proper trades team with the experience, skills and on-the-ground knowledge to deliver gardens that actually hold up over time.
What We Do
We handle the full scope of landscaping work, from initial design through to the finished product. That means excavation and earthworks, paving and stonework, retaining walls, garden beds, planting, lighting, drainage and ongoing maintenance. Whether you're starting with a blank slab of lawn or pulling apart an overgrown mess that's been neglected for years, we know how to get it sorted.
Some recent work gives you a feel for the range of projects we take on:
Large-format crazy paving entertaining area in natural stone with irregular pattern, finished with steel edging, drought-tolerant planting, feature trees and landscape lighting. The brief was low maintenance and year-round usability.
Spa retreat centred around a feature sauna. A curved crazy paving terrace anchors the space, transitioning into stepping stones through lush, low-maintenance planting. Warm, organic and deliberately relaxed.
Two projects: one using Formboss steel rings as raised garden beds with bluestone steppers set in compacted gravel, and another featuring large-format bluestone steppers set within turf leading directly to a barrel sauna.
Curved recycled brick retaining wall as a bold entry statement, framed by feature planting and Dichondra repens spilling over the face for a lush, established look. Structurally sound and low maintenance.
Serving Melbourne's Inner West and Beyond
Our base is Newport, and the inner west is our home ground. We know the soil conditions, the block sizes, the local climate patterns and the kinds of gardens that actually work out here. Yarraville, Williamstown, Altona, Spotswood, Seddon, Footscray, Maribyrnong, Sunshine, Keilor, St Albans, and the surrounding suburbs are all well within our regular service area.
That said, quality landscaping travels. We work regularly across Melbourne for clients in Brighton, Hampton, Sandringham, Elwood, Armadale, South Yarra, Toorak, Fitzroy, Northcote and Carlton, among others. If you're in Melbourne and you want landscaping done properly, we're worth a call regardless of your postcode.

The PJR team — Newport, VIC 3015
20 Years and a Team of 13 Qualified Tradesmen
PJR has been operating for over 20 years. That longevity isn't an accident. It comes from doing work that clients are genuinely happy with, showing up reliably, being honest about timelines and costs, and hiring tradesmen who actually know what they're doing.
Our team of 13 is made up of qualified, experienced professionals. There's no learning on your job here. Each person on site knows their trade and brings real-world expertise to the project. That depth of experience means we can take on complex, multi-stage builds and manage them from start to finish without things falling through the cracks.
We also understand that a landscaping project is a significant investment. We treat it that way.
Why PJR
We've been doing this long enough to know what holds up and what doesn't. The difference shows in the quality of the work and the absence of callbacks.
Enough capacity to take on substantial projects, with the skills to execute them. Every trade delivered by our own experienced crew.
We know Melbourne's inner west inside out — the soil types, the block sizes, the council requirements, and what works in these environments.
We're honest about what's achievable, what it will cost and when it will be done. That's not a selling point, it's just how a trades business should operate.
The photos on this site and our project pages are real projects we've done. No mock-ups, no stock imagery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is PJR Landscaping based and what areas do you cover?
PJR Landscaping & Design is based in Newport, VIC 3015 — in Melbourne's inner west. We service all suburbs in the inner west including Williamstown, Yarraville, Footscray, Altona, Spotswood, Seddon, Maribyrnong, and Sunshine. We also work across greater Melbourne including Brighton, Toorak, South Yarra, Fitzroy, Northcote, and Carlton.
Do you do landscaping in Footscray, Yarraville, and Williamstown?
Yes. Footscray, Yarraville, and Williamstown are among our most active service areas. We've completed paving, decking, retaining walls, planting, and full landscape builds throughout these suburbs and know the local block sizes, soil conditions, and council requirements well.
How much does landscaping cost in Melbourne's inner west?
Project costs vary based on scope and materials. A pathway and garden bed build in a compact inner-west backyard typically starts from $8,000–$15,000. A full rear yard transformation including paving, structures, turf, and planting generally ranges from $25,000 to $80,000+. We provide detailed quotes after a site visit at no charge.
What is full landscape construction?
Full landscape construction means we manage and deliver the entire project ourselves — excavation, earthworks, paving, retaining walls, drainage, decking, structures, planting, and turf — using our own qualified in-house team. One team from start to finish.
Do I need a permit for landscaping work in Melbourne?
It depends on the scope of work. In Victoria, retaining walls over 1 metre in height, decks more than 800mm above ground level, and freestanding structures like pergolas typically require a building permit. We flag any permit requirements when we visit your site and can advise on what applies to your specific project and council area.
How long does a landscaping project take?
Timelines vary with scope. A compact courtyard project — paving, garden beds, and planting — typically takes one to two weeks on site. A full rear yard transformation with multiple elements can run three to six weeks. We confirm the programme clearly before work begins and keep you updated throughout.
What makes PJR different from other landscaping companies in Melbourne?
Three things: we've been operating for over 20 years so we know what holds up and what doesn't; we have 13 qualified tradesmen on our own in-house team; and we're based in Newport so we know Melbourne's inner west inside out. We're also straight with clients about timelines, costs, and what's actually achievable.
